I wasn't sure if I should post this here, or in the mature Discussion board, since it's somewhat controversial. Anyway, regardless. What is your opinion of todays standards of spelling, grammar and punctuation?

Personally, I'm 100% disgusted by the state of it these days. Kids can't even spell simple words like 'Flu', 'Member', 'Weird', 'Taking', 'Somewhere', 'Receive' and so on. Why, just the other day I saw an 16 year old ask their boyfriend how to spell 'carrot'! But, it's not just the kids either. There are a HUGE percentage of adults who are still incapable of spelling correctly, even people with important jobs. Just lately, I've been receiving government letters with awful spelling errors, atrocious grammar and next to no punctuation.

Just recently I heard some professor from Oxford University was thinking of ousting punishing children for using text speak. He said it doesn't matter if it's spelled right!

What has the world come to? Is this acceptable? NO! I think not! Unless you want you kids growing up sending you birthday cards saying; "hpy bday. hp u hv a gdn."

What are your thoughts? Is it really that bad? Do you think you are good at spelling, grammar and punctuation?

This is in every way NOT acceptable. I mean, text speak is okay.......but only for texting and chatting with people. We cannot allow it to enter academic writing or professional writing, I think if people start to use it in academic writing and other types of important writing (or even everyday writing for that matter), then that officially means that it has been used way too much. It's kind of sad that a lot of adults can't speak correctly, even those with important jobs.

OK, I'll answer one by one...

My thoughts are as follows... Yes, spelling is getting worse. People seem as if they are constantly going backwards all the time and it's awful. I can't stand to look at peoples writing for fear of having to don my literary swastika.

Yes, it is really that bad. Anyone who disagrees are just lazy, idiotic, half-wits who either can't be bothered to keep up good spelling, or are too idle to learn it! If we don't tell those stupid text speaking morons to STFU when not using a phone, we'll soon be knee deep in abbreviations.

I think I'm ok, yeah. But, only because I'm willing to put effort into what I'm doing.

I agree that spelling has become a major issue in the literary world. I may not use perfect punctuation at all times (I'm a bit lazy with it), but I most definitely try to spell everything correctly.

Abbreviations belong in notes for class, not in everything we write! I can understand using them in notes. Often times, professors will talk fast or something and you need to have be able to take adequate notes. Later on you can go back and fix them, but using abbreviations in academic writing and important documents is crazy.

I honestly believe there should be something done about it, but what am I to do? Strike in front of President Obama because a letter he sent me had misspelled words? It sounds like an interesting idea, but I doubt it would work. We do need to start regulating it somehow. Slang and abbreviations do not belong in professional writing. I have had professors fail students for use of slang and things of that nature in academic writing. I don’t blame them. It is getting out of hand.

Yeah, we should oust the less intelligent to concentration camps. I'll kill your nextdoor neighbour, whose with me! High five, yeah!

There are many indifferences from race to gender to borders to simple blind intolerance of others - language is also an indifference. Infact it is a major one that we don't realise adds another six degrees of seperation between us and them. Even simple accents can change how others percieve us, either shunning or accepting. The point is that suppressing those who wish to speak as such will create a backlash and continue to widen the black hole of stereotypes we have already pooling and wasting away in society. I don't want a 'txtspeaker' to mock me or correct my own language, so it would be rather hypocritical for me to do the same to him/her/it.
As Stephen Fry said, "Language is evolving". For better or worse, it is doing just that.

My thoughts? Quite frankly, the state of grammar is depressing at best. My younger cousins have difficulty spelling the simplest words. And I'm not sure why. (Or so I say. I have a few ideas.) I've seen their homework. They're being asked to learn the words, but something tells me there's no real follow-up. Depressing. What's more, they can't really even use proper, understandable text speak. And one of them is about to graduate high school. Employers must love this. Deprssing.

What's more? There doesn't seem to be a mass movement of any kind to change grammatical incorrectness. Dprssing. None whatsoever. And in an age where web browsers offer spell-check by default, it's senseless not to spell correctly in an e-mail or something similar. Dprsng.

It's completely unacceptable. But as Rosencavalier quoted, "Language is evolving."

Or dvlvng.

i spell pretty good if i have to and i use punctuation when i have to. but when im online i get lazy and just want to type whats in my head no matter how it comes out. but i do think people who are writing official letters and such should take it seriously. the way i see it is, they can't spell, don't employ them.

Just last week or so, I heard one of my friends who is about 2 years older then me, say that he can finally spell "roar".

The year before last, there was a boy 4 years older then me who couldn't spell "dead".

My gosh people. Those are easy words. Its only like, four letters. Those should be easy enough. I like using text talk. I really like it, but i still know how to spell correctly. I just use text talk when in the chatroom or something, because i need to type faster in there.

They should make spelling tests harder and make the kids pay more attention to them, 'cause it doesnt seem to be doing much good for now.

Spelling is awful. It seems like as we advance, we have taken a step backwards on basic things. Spelling should be monitored strictly. No child should be without a good education.

I honestly think the fact that people cannot spell is atrocious. I mean I understand not being able to spell more complex words, because some people just aren't as prone to it, and their are some tricky words, but when you ask me how to spell art, I get a little ticked off.

As far as grammar goes, that can once again be tolerable to a degree because some people didn't get it nailed into their skulls, so I understand. My grammar could stand to be better, so I won't delve to far into this one. I am perturbed when I try to get on any sort of chatting service and the people using it have such atrocious grammar and spelling you cannot communicate. News flash, we can't chat if I have no idea what you are saying!

I am fifteen, so of course my grammar and spelling stand to improve, but I think they are decent enough.

I'm a grammar Nazi, as some of you are as well. I'm not perfect with my grammar or spelling or punctuation. I, in fact, have found numerous mistakes throughout these replies to this post, lol. I do use "text speak" as you can see. It's not appropriate to use text speak or improper grammar in your school work or official paper work pertaining to your career.

To what Rosen said about not wanting to be mocked nor corrected by a "text-speaker"; I don't see how they would be able to mock anyone who speaks properly when they themselves sound like a babbling idiot whenever they try to write a simple sentence. On that same note, how exactly would they be able to correct the way you speak if they themselves are unable to form a proper sentence?

I'm not saying everyone can, or will, speak properly with correct grammar and spelling. Some people have legitimate reasons why they are unable to read and/or write. I'm not going to make fun of those people because they simply have a much harder time (if they're able to at all) learning how to read/write. I'm a dick, not a douche.

There is my two cents worth for the day. All in all it is just jabber from me to you, so do whatever you wish. Bottom line is that I hate seeing spelling/grammar mistakes, especially in older folks who should know better. Texting and chatting online is one things, but important work (or even work that is for personal reasons) should be done with (general) proper grammar and spelling.

This topic bothers me the most on social networking sites. Whenever I see someone my age and older typing something like, "oMgs, miss u babiezZ," I shake my head in despair. I've lost hope in humanity at that given moment. Half the time, it's people I know who immigrated here.

It's true that the literacy rate is declining. Although I haven't seen it much in adults like in Mr. Bedlam's case, it seems the most prevalent in the youth. We're living in an age where almost anyone you know texts on their cell phones.. so it's not surprising when texting habits make their nasty appearance in kiddos' two page History essays. There's always that group of kids in university who somehow make it in one of your classes too.

I believe that there's some development though. I'm glad that some phones I've seen have an autocorrect texting feature that adds apostrophes, capitalization, etc. in common words. It will also change the word completely if it's way off.

If you think about it, it seems troubling too. Programs do all the work when the person who's doing the "lol i lubbb u" texts appears smarter. I just hope that people who are more exposed to the "corrective-ness" of the autocorrect features get into the habit of writing more properly. Accessibility may play a role into helping illiteracy too. Programs such as Firefox and Pidgin IM have autocorrect features.

Personally, I'm over the fact that there's a plethora of people out there who are illiterate. However, it bothers me the most when someone fails to utilize the janky Spell Checker function in Microsoft Word in the professional workplace. It's better than nothing.. I'd rather read someone's attempt at the Spell Checker rather than a rough draft riddled in errors. The day when 60% of the letters I get in the mail are filled with grammatical mistakes is when I will doubt humanity.
